Manchester United is preparing for a crucial Champions League away fixture against Como amidst a severe crisis. A six-match winless streak has placed immense pressure on the team, but a wave of injuries sweeping through the squad has become a true nightmare for manager Michael Carrick.
The English side heads to Italy following two contrasting results in European competition—a 4-0 victory over Sabah and a 0-2 defeat to Atletico Madrid. Currently, the Red Devils' defensive line is in tatters, with seven key players sidelined. The situation is further complicated by the absence of center-back Leny Yoro, who is suspended following his involvement in the match against Atletico.
In his pre-match press conference, manager Michael Carrick could not hide his concern while providing an update on the dire state of the squad. He admitted: "The current situation is quite chaotic; we are missing a number of key players."
The English manager then detailed the specific cases: "Martinez’s condition isn't too bad, but he won't be available to play in this match. As for Kobbie, we expect he needs another 10 days of rest, and Luke will require even longer. The team is dealing with a mix of illnesses and injuries Ayden is currently ill. Meanwhile, Marcus is still suffering from hip pain, and we are working hard to help him recover."
The precarious defensive situation may force Carrick to take a gamble by bringing back Matthijs de Ligt. The Dutch center-back has not played a single minute since undergoing back surgery last November. Alternatively, he may choose to place his faith in academy talents such as Dan Armer, Jaydan Kamason, or Harry Amass.
Carrick’s most pressing task now is to assemble a squad capable of meeting the European challenge, while awaiting the return of key players for this weekend’s domestic league fixture.
